Resumo
A República Portuguesa foi proclamada em 1910, decorridas pouco mais de duas décadas da queda da monarquia no Brasil. O processo político mobilizou o grande contingente de imigrantes portugueses e seus descendentes e colocou o evento em lugar de destaque na imprensa paulistana. Várias são as questões que o tema suscita, mas neste trabalho optou-se pela repercussão do processo em setores da sociedade afetados pela mudança de regime. Desde o início da revolução houve grande ansiedade e comoção entre os leitores dos jornais. As edições se esgotavam rapidamente e nas redações multidões se aglomeravam em busca de notícias. A imprensa tornou-se porta-voz desses interesses e no intuito de atuar na formação de opinião divulgou/ocultou notícias, construiu para suas páginas padrões e linguagens, segundo seus compromissos políticos. Os jornais editados na capital do Estado na época, entre eles A Plateia, atuaram como difusores dos ideais republicanos junto à comunidade luso-brasileira.

Abstract
The Portuguese Republican system was proclaimed in 1910, slightly over two decades after the end of monarchy in Brazil. The political process mobilized a great number of Portuguese immigrants and their descendants. The event was given ample coverage in the São Paulo press. The subject brings forth numerous issues; however, this paper opted to deal with its effect on sectors of society affected by the change in the regime. Since the beginning of the revolution there was great anxiety and commotion among newspaper readers. Editions were quickly sold out and, in the editorial rooms, crowds would gather in search of news. The press became the spokesperson of those matters of interest and, with the intent of acting towards influencing opinions, it disseminated/ concealed news, built patterns and languages for its pages, all in accordance with its political commitments. The newspapers that were published in the state capital at the time, among them “The Audience”, acted as disseminators of republican ideals among the Portuguese-Brazilian community.
