Abstract
This article deals with the urban formation of the Rio de Janeiro city center, particularly the blocks in the neighborhood of the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute. A historical and iconic research was defined to cover the physical area within the range of 150 to 500 meters, that encircles the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute building and main streets and historical areas, including the Public Gardens and the immediately adjacent streets. To demonstrate the urban development of the area and the evolution of the architectural characteristics of the buildings therein, this study approached the origins of the morphological formation of the surrounding area, its physical components and the style of its buildings. The research aims at contributing to divulge and promote the importance of documenting the physical remembrance of what the city center of Rio de Janeiro looked like. Thus, investigating the written history of the images of that space included the reading of the different types of graphic documents. In addition to the compilation and comments on the historical and iconic representation, we consider that the results also constitute new visual records. Under that perspective, priority was given to the verification of maps and other similar materials, as well as of some artistic and scientific images representative of the era, and the most remarkable examples of architecture in the urban and architectural development of the city.
