Resumo
O presente artigo tem como referência a estátua de d. Pedro II – a primeira erguida no Brasil em sua homenagem – de autoria do artista francês Jean Magrou, inaugurada em Petrópolis no dia 5 de fevereiro de 1911. O trabalho busca analisar a polêmica suscitada entre monarquistas e republicanos em torno desse projeto que provocou uma série de discussões acerca da figura do imperador, trazendo à tona o debate sobre a transladação dos restos mortais dos imperadores e a revogação do decreto de banimento da família imperial. Por fim, o trabalho também tem a intenção de divulgar uma obra de arte tão significativa para a história do Brasil de autoria do escultor estrangeiro que mais produziu no país no período de 1905 a 1925.

Abstract
This article makes reference to the statue of D. Pedro II – the first one erected in Brazil in his honor – that was inaugurated in Petrópolis on February 5, 1911, and whose author was the French sculptor, Jean Magrou. The paper will attempt to analyze the controversy between monarchists and republicans over the project that brought forth a series of discussions regarding the figure of the emperor, as well as the debate over the transfer of the emperors’ mortal remains and the revocation of the decree that banned the imperial family from Brazil. Finally, this article also intends to divulge a piece of art so meaningful for the history of Brazil, made by a foreign sculptor who produced most monuments in Brazil during the period between 1905 and 1925.
