Resumo
O artigo enfoca as ideias políticas e a cultura jurídica em Portugal, a partir da prática historiográfica e da inserção de Manuel Paulo Merêa no campo intelectual português na passagem à modernidade. Conhecido pela produção intelectual no campo dos estudos de história do Direito, Merêa escreveu livros e artigos sobre autores do pensamento político europeu. Os textos sobre os autores do século XVII (Suárez, Grócio e Hobbes) e Rousseau (século XVIII) são interpretados a partir da perspectiva da história das ideias políticas. Enfocamos os trabalhos de Paulo Merêa tendo em vista o contexto histórico da virada para o século XX e os sentimentos políticos referidos as relações com a cultura política e religiosa. O artigo baseia-se em pesquisa com fonte bibliográfica dos acervos da Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa, da Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro e do Real Gabinete Português de Leitura do Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract
This article focuses on the political ideas and juridical culture in Portugal, with basis on historiographical practices and the insertion of Manuel Paulo Merêa in the Portuguese intellectual scenery at the start of the modern era. Merêa, who was known by his intellectual output in the study area of the History of Law, wrote books and articles about authors of European political thinking. Texts on XVII century authors (Suárez, Grócio and Hobbes) and Rousseau (XVIII century) are interpreted from the perspective of the history of political ideas. We focus on the writings of Paulo Merêa from the point of view of the historical context at the turn of the XX century, and the political thinking regarding their relationship with the political and religious culture. Research for this article was based on bibliographical sources from the collections at the Lisbon National Library, the Rio de Janeiro National Library and the Portuguese Royal Reading Library in Rio de Janeiro.
