Resumo
Este trabalho, inserindo-se nas celebrações do tricentenário do congresso que conduziu à “Paz de Utrecht” no início do sec. XVIII, pretende destacar o papel do diplomata português D. Luis da Cunha (1662-1749) nas negociações preliminares de Portugal com Inglaterra, com vista às negociações dos tratados de Utrecht (1713-1715). Nele pretendemos analisar a incidência dos assuntos econômicos e políticos no conjunto das negociações desenvolvidas por D. Luís da Cunha, salientando o papel que o Brasil viria a assumir, num contexto em que as recentes notícias da descoberta do ouro davam uma nova importância aos domínios coloniais portugueses, num tempo em que os Estados europeus delineavam as suas futuras estratégias de expansão colonial.

Abstract
This paper is inserted in the celebrations of the tricentennial of the Congress which led to “Peace in Utrecht” at the beginning of the XVIIIth Century. It will give special attention to the role of the Portuguese diplomat, D. Luis da Cunha (1662-1749), during the preliminary negotiations with England aiming at further negotiations of the Utrecht treaty (1713-1715). We intend to analyze the presence of economic and political issues during those negotiations carried out by D. Luis da Cunha, focusing on the role of Brazil, when the recent news of the discovery of gold gave more importance to the Portuguese colonies at a time when the European States started to draw their future strategies for colonial expansion.
