Abstract
This article aims to present and discuss the results of a three-year investigation about an important facet of the Commemoration of the Tercentenary of the Death of Luís de Camões in Brazil, hosted by the Gabinete Português de Leitura (GPL, known in English as the Royal Portuguese Reading Room or the Royal Cabinet), in 1880. Despite the alleged and apparent “natural” leadership of the GPL in organizing the event, there were tensions between Portuguese who lived in the then capital of the Brazilian Empire and in Portugal. From the documents analyzed, we realized that the party served as a strategy for GPL to become, in fact, a Brazilian institution and to establish its representation overseas.
Key Words: Portuguese Reading Room; Luís de Camões; Brazil; Portugal.
