Abstract
Early in the twentieth century, there gradu- ally grew among Portuguese and Brazilian intellectuals the idea of creating a Portuguese- Brazilian community that would unite the two peoples - by many considered brothers - and fos- ter common interests rooted in the same culture. Creating such community would enable them to enhance and consolidate its diverse and current events. Standing out among the intelligentsia in both countries were João de Barros and João do Rio who shared the same ideal and fought to turn it into reality. One of their first steps would be the publication of a magazine that would spread and diffuse the communitarian dream they persued. They named it Atlantida, a name that suitably reflected the double ideal of peace, prosperity and happiness found in Plato‘ uto- pia, and at the same time the Atlantic spirit they wished for their union as a mean of countering the growing Germanic influence by constructing a Luso-Brazilian identity. Merging the Platonic ideal with reality, João de Barros and João do Rio believed that they would achieve the aim that united them, namely the creation of a Luso- Brazilian identity. This aim never materialized and they were left with the the bitter taste of defeat.
