Abstract
The article reports on the voyage of the Dutch navy officer Q.M.R. Ver Huell on the war brig De Vlieg (Mosca) towards the Island of Java in the East. He crossed the Atlantic and had to dock in the Bay of All Saints after the brig suf- fered damage. Two months later, when he was about to leave Salvador da Bahia and resume the voyage, he was surprised by the arrival of the fleet that brought the Prince Regent Dom João to Brazil. Since the vessel sailed under the flag of the Netherlands, a nation allied to Napo- leon Bonaparte, it was confiscated, preventing Ver Huell and his companions from leaving the country. They were arrested for three years in Salvador da Bahia at the expense of the Portu- guese government, until the last crew member was allowed to return to Europe. The article de- scribes the crossing and the life and customs of the natives of Salvador back then.
