Abstract
Both the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and his young German wife Lotte Zweig were able to speak read and write in several languages. Stefan, in addition to being a native German speaker, was fluent in Italian, French and English. And Lotte, besides German, also mastered English and French. Both, therefore, were linguistically gifted and had a high level of linguistic awareness. Neither of them, however, spoke Portuguese, the foreign language of the country they loved and chose to live in. In this paper we intend to examine some emotional difficulties and blockages involved in learning this new language while in exile. Why does Portuguese sound so ugly and complicated to them? Is it possible to like a country and its people and, at the same time, reject its language?
