Abstract
Historiography has been dedicated to the study of the Portuguese emigration movement that took place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, little is known about the reflux movement. This study intends to fill this gap by addressing the following questions: can we find in folklore traces of the acculturation of Portuguese émigrés in Brazil and their dissemination through reflux in their country of origin? What was the impact of this reflux and in which regions was it felt? Who were the main drivers of this cultural transfer? We present here a short framework of the causes, consequences and statistics of the Portuguese emigration to Brazil during the said period, and try to answer these questions by analyzing the lyrics of Portuguese popular songs. For this purpose, some folk songs from various regions dating from the beginning of the 20th century were collected for the first time. They reflect how massive emigration was present in the daily life and in the subconscious of those who stayed, and allow us to examine the cultural reflux that emerged from those who left.
Key Words: Portuguese emigration; cultural reflux; folklore.
