Abstract
We analyze in this article how Portuguese intellectuals interpreted the Brazilian New State. We examine their views based on some critiques they wrote in the Brasília Magazine (1942- 1944) which was published by the Institute for Brazilian Studies of the University of Coimbra. According to our thesis, their interpretations were rooted in a certain political mirroring between Salazarism and Vargasism which Portuguese intellectuals legitimized by comparing authoritarianism with corporatism in the Portuguese and Brazilian New State. To better understand this question, we will first provide an overview of the University of Coimbra where the antiliberal, antisocialist, corporative and authoritarian intellectuals of Brasília Magazine studied. Resorting to the fields of pedagogy, law and history, we will then analyze the image of the Brazilian New State stemming from critiques about Brazilian books.
Key Words: Brasília Magazine; New State; authoritarianism; corporatism.
