Abstract
The Pernambuco Revolution of 1817 is still a controversial subject in Brazilian historiography, having been approached with reserved from the outset in view of the polemic about the meaning of “revolution” which was attributed to it in the first comprehensive study published on the matter in 1840. We focus our analysis here on the chain of events that took place in the conjunctural context of 1808, and on identifying the position of the captaincy of Pernambuco in the context of the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil which had been institutionalized in 1815. We aim to deepen our understanding about the local particularities in relation to the causes that led to the movement of rejection of the political model of the Luso-Brazilian unity as a monarchical government, and reflect on the cherished ideal of a republic that was adopted by revolutionary means on March 6, 1817.
