Resumo
Escrita em 1861 e encenada apenas em 1875, a peça O Jesuíta é ambientada no Rio de Janeiro de meados do século XVIII, enfocando o período que antecede a expulsão dos jesuítas do Brasil, em 1759. O drama histórico tem entre seus personagens, além do protagonista ficcional, o jesuíta Samuel, personagens reais como o Marquês de Pombal, o padre Gabriel Malagrida, o Conde de Bobadela e o escritor Basílio da Gama. Neste artigo, interessa-nos analisar a reconstituição histórica que Alencar faz do período na peça e as representações de que são alvo as autoridades coloniais e metropolitanas, os missionários jesuítas e a própria Companhia de Jesus, procurando vinculá-las ao projeto nacionalista do político e escritor romântico e às transformações político-sociais em curso no Brasil na segunda metade do século XIX.

Abstract
Written in 1861 and performed only in 1875, the play O Jesuíta takes place in mid-eighteenth century Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the period preceding the expulsion the Jesuits from Brazil in 1759. Among the characters of this historical drama, besides its fictional protagonist, the Jesuit Samuel, are real persons such as the Marquês de Pombal, Father Gabriel Malagrida, Conde de Bobadela and the writer Basílio da Gama. In this article, our point is to analyze Alencar`s historical reconstitution of the period in the play and the representations that target the colonial and metropolitan authorities, the Jesuit missionaries and the Society of Jesus itself, seeking to link them to the nationalistic project of this politician and romanticist, and to the socio-political transformations occurring in Brazil in the second half of the nineteenth century.
