Resumo
O presente artigo objetiva analisar a política de terras que se desenvolveu durante a configuração da América Portuguesa e o transcorrer do Império Brasileiro, recuperando-se as propostas de transformação da estrutura da propriedade da terra que se fizeram presentes, na metrópole e na Colônia Brasil, durante o século XVIII, bem como em diferentes momentos da existência do Império, no século XIX. Para tanto, avaliam-se temas referentes à produtividade agrícola e à expansão populacional, problematizando-se a vinculação entre latifúndio e escravismo, numa comparação com os Estados Unidos da América do Norte.

Abstract
This article aims to analyze land policies developed since the shaping of Portuguese America and during the period of the Brazilian Empire, through the evaluation of proposals to transform the structure of land ownership, then in force both in the metropolis and in Colonial Brazil during the Eighteenth century. It also will analyze those conditions during the various stages of the Empire in the Nineteenth century. With that purpose, issues concerning agricultural productivity and populational increase will be reviewed, as well as the linkage between large landed estates and slavery, having in mind a comparison with the United States of America.
