Abstract
This paper analyzes the history of the participation of scholars of the Prata river region in the IHGB, as the expression of the interchange and exchange of scholars who were exiled by Juan Manuel de Rosas, and spent some time in Brazil. It will also tell us how the pro-Rosas and against-Rosas propaganda circulated in the IHGB. Consequently, the collections left by those scholars were responsible for the formation of the patrimony of those institutions, and their objects were transformed into sources for the definition of the frontiers of Southern Brazil and the Prata river region. The conclusion is that the Historic and Geographic Institutes unveil the tensions and dialogues of the written history in face of the demands of the development of political representations. It also becomes a space for silent diplomacy, showing that the empire had not turned its back to the Prata region republics during the period 1838-1852.
