Abstract
The article examines aspects of the formation of the mercantile group of Colonia del Sacramento throughout the eighteenth century. The article comprehends four parts: the first part analyzes the standards of recruitment and the size of the mercantile community. The second part discusses the access of some members of the group to the mechanisms of “gentrification” existing in the Old Regime Portuguese world, taking into account the peculiarities and limitations of Colonia del Sacramento. The third part approaches the involvement of Sacramento traders in the local administrative structure, occupying not only the leading positions of colonial militias, but also positions available in the Royal Treasury. It became evident that many commercial agents participated in factions, thus connected to powerful governors of the Colony. The final part attempts to recover fragments of the commercial networks in which the merchants were involved. The information in the slave death records has brought us more detailed data on the involvement in the slave trade, making it possible to know who were the local dealers and the owners of the consignments of slaves coming from Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.
