Abstract
This article is a reflection on the creation of the Luso-Brazilian United Kingdom, in 1815, an event unexplored by historiography and thus absent from our collective memory. Here it is analyzed as a defining historical fact of great importance in the unfolding of the process of Independence and formation of the National State, in the form of the Empire of Brazil, as much as the fact of the transference of the Por- tuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808 was of importance. The article reflects on the relevance of such events leading to the imperial form ad- opted at that time and in the resulting process of construction of territorial unity and the iden- tity of the Brazilian State. It looks at the condi- tions that made such a process unique: taking place with an initial movement of approaching and not rejecting the former metropole; reflect- ing on the beginning of Luso-Brazilian unity, necessary for the formation of the sought after powerful Atlantic empire. It situates the growing conflicts between divergent interests that led to the collapse of the United Kingdom model and the resulting rupture of the Luso-Brazilian unifi- cation. Then new boundaries of a new imperial entity were defined, “from the Amazon to the River Plate,” and the process of construction of the Empire of Brazil and Brazilian identity was begun..
