Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the genesis and development of Brazilian diplomacy, including its traditions, principles, and values, as illustrated by a few historical figures that marked its evolution, as well as the role played by Portugal in that process. Our purpose is to stimulate further research into the presence of Portugal in the formation of Brazilian diplomatic thought. Further research will aid in assessing how Portuguese governments, institutions and policies on principles and values contributed to shaping Brazilian diplomacy. The author is confident that new topics of analysis will emerge from this historical reflection, and bring about a more thorough evaluation of Portugal’s influence on the diplomacy in Brazil during the imperial and republican periods. The paper is based on a lecture given by the author at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE). The six personalities discussed both in the lecture and in this paper are: Alexandre de Gusmão, José Bonifácio, Duarte da Ponte Ribeiro, Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, and Rui Barbosa. They were chosen for their work as diplomats or statesmen to illustrate the historical ties between Portugal and the Brazilian diplomacy and the values upon which these ties were based.
Key Words:
