Abstract
This text deals with some aspects of the intellectual relationship between two of the major writers of the last century: the poet Manuel Bandeira and the sociologist Gilbert Freyre. In 1924, Gilberto Freyre read for the first time Manuel Bandeira’s poetry and published an enthusiastic review in the “Diário de Pernambuco”. On the other hand, Bandeira later sent a letter to Freyre commenting an article by the sociologist on the culinary of Pernambuco. Freyre wrote him back asking for a poem on his childhood spent in Recife. The famous poem “Evocação do Recife” was born. The experience seems to have an effect on Bandeira’ writing. The association between the humble surroundings and the daily life of Santa Teresa, a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro and the memories of his early days in Recife became an active element of his poetry, which shows a vivid empathy for ordinary aspects of daily life and the surprises of the spoken Brazilian Portuguese. Since then, successive approximations came between them. The elaboration of an “elective affinity” associating the creative interests and sensibilities of both authors developed into a close friendship and mutual intellectual influence.
Key Words: Intellectuals; Manuel Bandeira; Gilberto Freyre.
