Resumo
O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar e discutir alguns resultados da pesquisa realizada sobre a história da “educação musical” no Brasil, no século XIX, tendo como foco a experiência ocorrida no Imperial Collegio de Pedro II (CPII), entre 1838 e 1858, isto é, entre a sua inauguração, a ascensão e o declínio da posição da música no currículo e a saída do seu principal Mestre, dentro desse recorte temporal. O texto está estruturado em três sessões centrais, para além da introdução e das considerações finais. A primeira sessão, dedicada à importância sociocultural e política da música no Rio de Janeiro, na primeira metade do século XIX. A segunda, que trata das características e do seu lugar no CPII, quando chegou a estar entre os estudos com o maior número de lições e de discípulos na instituição. E, por fim, a terceira, onde se procura analisar os principais contextos de ensino e aprendizagem de música nesse período e, sobretudo, o papel e os interesses de seus “professores” na sua constituição enquanto um estudo escolar – tendo como dado mais recente a participação de Francisco Manuel da Silva.

Abstract
This article discusses the results of research conducted on the history of musical education in Brazil in the nineteenth Century. It focuses on its praxis in the Imperial Collegio de Pedro II (CPII), between 1838 and 1858 –from its inauguration, through its rise and decline as part of the curriculum, until its main Master left the institution. The article comprises an introduction, three parts and a conclusion: The first part discusses the socio-cultural and political importance of music in Rio de Janeiro, in the first half of the nineteenth century. The second addresses the characteristics and relevance of musical education in the CPII, period in which it was one of the subjects with the highest number of lessons and students in the institution. The third analyzes the main contexts of teaching and learning of music in this period, especially the role of the instructors and their interests in music education. A special attention is given to the participation of Master Francisco Manuel da Silva.
