Abstract
This article is an attempt to explain the objective of the Republican Revolution launched in 1817 in Pernambuco and its adjacent captaincies. The clergy at the time, consisting of Illuminists and Masons, was enlightened and imbued with the principles of the French Revolution. The bourgeoisie, on the other hand, consisted of business people engaged in import and export trade activities. It felt despised by the central government in Rio de Janeiro and had no access to public offices, which were then an appanage of the sugar aristocracy. Like the clergy, it consisted mainly of Freemasons. This was the first revolution in the history of the Kingdom of Portugal to seize power. It lasted seventy-five days, and was a movement completely opposed to the Court’s conservatism.
Key Words: Republic; Masonry; Commercial bourgeoisie; Enlightened clergy.
