Abstract
This study on the houses inhabited by Antônio de Araújo de Azevedo, the Count of Barca, was based on various documents. A diplomat, minister and a man of science and spirit, the Count lived in Passeio Street and in Engenho Velho, both in Rio de Janeiro, from 1808 to 1817. We seek to better understand the decorative arts and the ways of living at that time when the court of King John VI settled in the city. Textual and iconographic sources were consulted from the Barca Archive (University of Minho); the National Library RJ; the National Archives and newspapers from the XIX century. We aim to retrace the main characteristics of the two houses he inhabited: the first, located in Passeio Street, he used for social and scientific purposes, and the second, located in Matoso Street on a hill surrounded by fresh air, is where he sought to recover his health in privacy.
Key Words: Antônio Araújo de Azevedo; manor houses; Johannine period.
