Abstract
The history of the “Dutch invasions” in Brazil between 1630 and 1654 is a chapter of colonial history commonly told in history textbooks. However, questioning is necessary to understand the constitution of a paradigmatic historiographic model about the history of the Dutch presence in the northern captaincies. The most widely used interpretation of the episode in textbooks goes back to Varnhagen in the nineteenth century. Our research was based on the critical analysis of the thematic approach in the main works of the historian, namely: General History of Brazil (1854-1857) and History of the Struggles with the Dutch in Brazil (1871). We further identified the primary sources that underpin his work, namely the chronicles of war. Our analysis showed that, as an expression of the nationalism under construction at that time, Varnhagen told history from the Portuguese perspective, highlighting the Lusitanian sources and defending the resistance and insurrection of Pernambuco. The historian even used the term “enemies” in many passages to refer to the Dutch who fought for the possession of and permanence in the territory. However, the Nassovian period translated into an inflection of the version constructed by the historian, since his narrative had to reproduce the economic prosperity and the political stability acknowledged in the sources. We conclude by contextualizing the approach of “Dutch invasion” within the framework of the nineteenth-century national historiography, concerned with the writing of the history of our homeland.
