AbstractThe article aims to analyze the political actions
of Luis Alves de Lima e Silva during his early
years as senator of the Rio Grande do Sul
Province, to which he had been elected after his
peacekeeping mission in the Ragamuffin war.
Putting his actions into a wider political context
and in line with the recent historiography about
the Brazilian representative government, we
intend to explain how the then Count of Caxias
became an important articulator of not only
provincial interests in parliament but also of
interests and political projects of the Empire in
the interior of the newly pacified province, after
almost a decade of conflicts.
