Abstract
The author of this article will analyze the history and structure of the Dutch West Indies Company, focusing on the political and economic circumstances that contributed to the rise and the decline of the Netherlands as a world commercial power. The Company, as a hybrid structured society, of common law and private law, obtained in the seventeenth century, the monopoly to navigate and undertake commercial trade with the Americas and West Africa, temporarily conquering part of Brazil. This expansionist strategy in the western hemisphere did not survive the consequences of the AngloDutch Wars. The Dutch West Indies Company should not be considered simply an ancestor of the corporation system, but rather the predecessor of the symbiotic relationship between public and private.
Key Words: Dutch West Indies Company; Netherlands; Holland; corporation; monopoly.
