Abstract
The purpose of this work is to analyze the reasons for the long delay in the acclamation of D. João VI, which took place on February 6, 1818. A common assumption has been that the delay occurred because of the scenario of disputes and domestic tensions that were taking place in Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve at the time. The possibility of choosing the American colony of the Portuguese Empire for holding the acclamation ceremony, and the return of ideas of legitimacy and restoration of the values of the Old Regime, led to distrust of the Portuguese, who felt increasingly pushed to the side in the political game of power within the Empire. In order to understand these tensions, we reviewed written testimonies of the past, including speeches and addresses, that shed light on how the Portuguese coped with and experienced that historical moment.
