Abstract
The paper aims to present the troubled political scenario in Maranhão resulting from the clash between two opposing narratives in the province: a narrative closer to the interests of the government of Pedro José da Costa Barros, considered as an ally of the “Portuguese”, and a second one opposed it, favoring, therefore, the defense of the “Brazilians”. Thus, in view of the discovery of revolutionary plans alleged by the government, the possibility of more concrete actions is discussed, albeit they were beyond the legal dictates. Writings about the conflict come into play in the press in Maranhão and Rio de Janeiro. A series of pamphlets from the court and some newspapers from Rio de Janeiro also participate in the political debate in Maranhão.
